Over 2,000 Killed Amid Widespread Protests in Iran; US Threatens Economic Sanctions
Tehran — Around 2,000 people have reportedly died in ongoing protests across Iran, an Iranian official told Reuters on Tuesday, attributing the deaths of both civilians and security personnel to attacks by “terrorists.”
The protests, which have spread to multiple cities in recent weeks, were ignited by public frustration over government policies and socio-economic issues. The demonstrations have been met with a violent crackdown, highlighting the escalating unrest across the country.
In response to the crackdown, US President Donald Trump announced that countries continuing to conduct business with Iran could face a 25 percent tariff on trade with the United States. This is part of Washington’s effort to increase economic pressure on Tehran following the deadly clashes.
Analysts warn that the situation in Iran remains highly volatile, with tensions showing no immediate signs of abating as citizens continue to demand reforms and accountability from the government.
