Typhoon Kalmaegi Leaves One Dead, Displaces Tens of Thousands in Philippines
Typhoon Kalmaegi swept through parts of the Philippines overnight on Monday, leaving at least one person dead and affecting nearly 60,000 residents, according to authorities.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on Tuesday that the storm triggered torrential rainfall, flash floods, landslides, and widespread power outages across five regions in the central and southern parts of the country.
Local officials confirmed one fatality in Bohol Province, where a 52-year-old man was killed after a tree was uprooted by strong winds and fell on him. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to confirm additional possible casualties in Central Visayas.
More than 75,000 residents were evacuated ahead of the stormâs landfall, with communities in low-lying and coastal areas ordered to move to safer ground. Roads, bridges, and houses were reported flooded, while several infrastructure facilities sustained significant damage.
In Cebu Province, floodwaters rose to the second floors of homes, forcing residents to seek refuge on rooftops and upper rooms. Meanwhile, Siargao Island, a major tourism hub, suffered a total power blackout after strong winds toppled multiple power lines and communication towers.
Disaster management teams, police, and military personnel have been deployed for rescue operations, relief distribution, and power restoration efforts.
The Philippine weather bureau warned that Kalmaegi may continue to bring intermittent rains in some areas and advised residents to remain vigilant. Officials say assessment of damage to agriculture and infrastructure is ongoing.
